Practice Safe Shopping (Online)

'Tis the season to be jolly and spend lots of money. You long ago figured out how to beat the crowds and bumper-car parking lots by shopping online. Now you need to make sure you and your identity stay safe online. In the hustle and bustle of clicking the "buy now" button, you run a higher risk of identity theft. According to the 2011 Identity Fraud Survey Report conducted by Javelin Strategy & Research, 40% of all identity theft victims had their information misused while making an online purchase, compared to 13% for purchases made over the phone or through the mail. That doesn't mean online shopping isn't safe. It just means you need to be smart.

Top 5 ways to protect your identity while shopping online:

1. Protect your passwords
Never reveal your passwords to anyone--even your family and friends. It's sad but true that many cases of ID theft involve those closest to you.

2. Make sure your antivirus program is up-to-date
A current antivirus program, such as McAfee, will automatically update your PC against new threats.

3. Only shop on secure sites
You can tell if a site is secure if you see a closed padlock on the browser's status bar. In addition, the website's URL should change to "s-http" or "https" when you are asked to provide payment information.

4. Don't click the link
If you receive an e-mail advertising a great sale, don't click on the link in the e-mail unless you know and trust the retailer. Instead, type the URL and check the site for authenticity and credibility. Malicious links sent in e-mail are the No. 1 way for cyber crooks to insert Trojans and viruses on computers, including the kind that can steal your personal information--and you'll never even know it until it's too late.

5. Pay by credit card, not debit card
All credit cards come with specific consumer protection that is far superior to checking account debit cards. In addition, frequently monitor online your credit card and banking accounts to make sure only the items you have charged or purchases are listed.

Is That More Money In Your Pocket Or Are You Just Happy To See Me...

When it comes to saving a lot of money, sometimes it's the little savings that add up. A Harris Poll randomly surveyed adults to find out what they're doing to save money now, and the replies are a step-by-step list on how you can tighten your belt without a lot of sacrifice. Here's the top 10 best ways to save money now and the percentage of people who are actually doing this:

Purchase more generic brands, 65%

Brown bag lunch instead of buying it, 48%

Switch to tap water and refillable bottles instead of buying bottled water, 39%

Go to the hairdresser or barber less often, 38%

Cancel one or more magazine subscriptions, 31%

Cancel or cut back on cable TV service, 22%

Stop buying coffee in the morning, 22%

Cancel a newspaper subscription, 17%

Cancel landline telephone service and rely only on cell phone service, 15%

Carpool or use mass transit instead of driving to work, 12%

NEW: Lace Flats

H&M divided Lace Ballet Flats (12.95euros)

The day before yesterday I was in the H&M trying to decide if I wanted to buy these or not.. I didn't figuring I had so many shoes already.. went home, turned on the computer and started browsing my favorite blogs to catch up on posts.. Then I saw the Cherry Blossom Girl's posts with the Lace Valentino Boots and the Lace Louboutin's. Well that did the trick for me haha of course these are nowhere near as great as the Valentino's or Louboutin's but I'm really happy with them! Also they are made of a mesh like material so who knows maybe I will embellish them some day?

I'M DREAMING OF A GREEN CHRISTMAS

This year, instead of wishing for a white Christmas, think green instead. An environmentally friendly holiday can be just as festive. Here are 15 ways to do just that.

Trade in those incandescent lights for LEDs, which use a fraction of the energy.

Look for recycled content in wrapping paper. This can be difficult to find and may actually require online ordering, but expressing demand will help drive its availability.

Recycle your own wrapping paper, boxes and plastic packaging.

Scale back the elaborate outdoor displays. You can be festive without being Times Square.

If you do use outdoor light displays, use a timer so the lights are on display only at times when there is an audience.

Give your cookies away on a real plate or recyclable plate. Likewise, if you're hosting a party, either bite the bullet and actually do all those dishes or use recyclable ones.

Take the time in your holiday party aftermath to sort through all the cans and bottles that can be recycled.

Make good use of your green bin and/or compost bin this holiday season. Uneaten food from holiday dinners and parties can go in there, as can scraps from meal preparation, soiled napkins and paper food packaging, coffee grounds and tea bags, paper plates and your great aunt's famous fruitcake.

Consider asking those with whom you exchange gifts to make a charitable donation in your name. There is no packaging involved. Consider food banks and shelters or organizations that purchase animals or supplies for families in developing countries. For a truly green Christmas, your contribution could go toward environmental conservation.

When gift giving, try an experience present, such as tickets to a show or a night at a hotel. It's something personal that isn't loaded up with all that packaging.

Buy sustainable. Many stores offer fair-trade products.

Real trees are great, but consider artificial. If buying a real tree, look for trees that are grown locally. Many are shipped from a great distance consuming fuel to bring them to local Christmas tree lots.

Take reusable bags with you when you go Christmas shopping. Don't let all that extra shopping generate extra plastic.

Save your money, save the environment and spare yourself from long hours of looking for the proper gift items at the mall. Start a trend: show you care with some thoughtful homemade gifts. Local, organic, nutritious food items fresh out of your kitchen can work very well.

When practicing your out-with-the-old, in-with-the-new New Year routine, don't just throw out old toys, clothes, shoes and household items. All these items can be donated to organizations that support people less fortunate.

WHAT ''I'' SAYS ABOUT YOU

Words are like fingerprints, revealing much about your relationships, honesty and status. And perhaps the smoking gun among all words is a very simple one: "I." Whether you use the word "I" frequently or hardly at all speaks volumes about you -- everything from love to lies to leadership, according to University of Texas at Austin social psychologist James W. Pennebaker, author of "The Secret Life of Pronouns: What Our Words Say About Us." "Using computerized text analyses on hundreds of thousands of letters, poems, books, blogs, tweets, conversations and other texts, it is possible to begin to read people's hearts and minds in ways they can't do themselves," says Pennebaker, who used his research in computational linguistics to analyze pronouns, articles, prepositions and a handful of other small function words. "Who would have guessed," said Pennebaker, "that words like 'I,' 'you,' 'the,' 'to,' 'but,' and 'and' could say so much about us?"

Some real-life examples about the function word, "I":

What "I" says about personality
Those who say "I" a lot tend to come across as more personal, warm and honest, while those who don't use it frequently come across as more self-confident. President Barack Obama uses "I" far less than any other modern president. Comparably, former Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush used "I" at very high rates.

What "I" says about honesty
The word "I" is very much like a linguistic lie detector. When people tell the truth, they not only use more complex language, but also use "I" more. "People who are lying tend to not use the word 'I.' They are psychologically distancing themselves," says Pennebaker. "And they also avoid markers of complexity such as conjunctions and prepositions."

What "I" says about love
When a couple uses function words, such as "I," at a comparable rate and thus have a similar language style, they are far more like to be romantically compatible.

OUTFIT: Daisy Dress

photos taken by Nadia from Froufrouu

Wearing: Vintage Daisy Dress from Yo Vintage, (fake) Converse

These photos where taken in New York a few months ago and somehow a bit forgotten? (damn you jet lag!!)

Right now I'm busy making all my summer outfits winter proof by just adding black tights and cardigans to outfits, easy peasy!

Oh I do have to tell you about the shoes! When going to New York you will need to bring good "walking shoes" since you will be walking a lot! Packing wise I wanted to bring shoes I could simply tuck a way easy so I bought these a day before the trip for $3 (yes three) at the H&M (just for this trip) in the end maybe that wasn't the smartest move since the shoes were new and thus.. hurting feet! next time I will stick with my old sneakers :)

Top 10 Fashion Blogger DIY's

Today's Top 10 is all about DIY's! I will give you my favorite 10 DIY bloggers and 2 DIY trends that I just had to include in this post as well.

I was thinking a long time about how to best explain the reasoning behind my favorite 10 DIY bloggers (too bad I couldn't find a DIY for that) I came to the following;

When you see life through the right pair of glasses, your average Hardware Store will become your Tiffanies&Co.
(this kind of references to a certain blogger in my top 10 of course)(hmm sounds kind of cheesy, doesn't it?)

So check out my list of 10 and the "2 words of the season" and my "3rd thought in the morning" (both very much DIY related!)

2 words of the season:
Glitter Shoes!

Ever since seeing the Miu Miu's, sparkles have been on my mind!
Glitter on the heels, glitter on the back of the shoe, the whole shoe glittered.. It's not only a great DIY for this season it's actually a lot of fun doing!

These are my favorite glitter shoe tutorials:
Diy Glitter shoes by Burda Style (they covered the fixating of the glitters as well!!)
Le fanciulle diy sparkly boots and glitter heel
DIY Glitter Converse by Love Meagan

My 3rd thought in the morning: (thought 1; Coffee, Thought 2; food)
STUD EVERYTHING!

Yes, this keeps being on my mind! Stud, studs, studding..
I still want a pair of studded converse, boots, jeans and leather jacket, just about everything.

I did bought a bunch of studs 2 years ago and failed miserably, the studs kept falling out! So best is to stick with the pro's on this one like Park&Cube here (ahhh she uses a knife and a ruler to bend the darn things!) and ps. I made this (for refinery29) here (ahhh heavy duty tools as well!)

and finally the top 10!
1) PARK&CUBE

Shinni still has some of the best DIY's ever and shows us in very well made tutorials how to do it. Her DIY's are very well executed and are my absolute reference in how-to-go-about-things (like studding and ripping jeans) and that makes her my number 1.

2) Love Aesthetics

Ivania's DIY's are brilliant, I don't think I have to say more..
http://love-aesthetics.blogspot.com/search/label/DIY

3) Vanilla Scented

Maria's blog is crucial for my DIY list! Most of her creative work are her own designs and art works and thus not really diy's and the (real) diy's go often without a tutorial and are sometimes made after other bloggers tutorials (the fringed shoulder pad jacket and draped skirt are via anywho.dk) BUT she's massive inspiration and I'm a very big fan of her designs, the reason her blog is crucial for my list is the fact that when she does a simple diy she thinks outside of the box and translates it in perfect choices of fabrics, colors and placements giving a very own and updated look to a well-known concept!!

4) SEMI

Well, hello there birds! Why didn't I think of this dress?
and why didn't anybody else including me think of placing a different color studs under the bag? I'm so going to spray paint studs!!

5) A Pair & A Spare

I really like the cut&sew DIY's and those Prada's are bloody Brilliant!!

http://apair-andaspare.blogspot.com/

ps. very good post about How To DIY!
pps. will be using this tutorial to spray paint studs!

6) Honestly WTF

Loads of my friends and family will be getting bracelets for Christmas!

http://honestlywtf.com/category/diy/http://honestlywtf.com/

7) Because I'm Addicted

So many good DIY's!! well executed and good tutorials!!

http://becauseimaddicted.net/search/label/diy

8) p.s. I made this

Love the collages and the studded trench is just asking to be made!

http://psimadethis.com/
p.s. they even have a book!

9) Once the Foxy Man now Discount Universe

I still check the old posts from the foxyman on a regular basis, the finger tip glove diy is amazing and the blog is the best diy inspiration! The Discount Universe (blog and store) is also possibly the best inspiration out there when it comes to diy's! Best studded everything out there!! and if I had $$$ I would buy everything!

http://thefoxyman.blogspot.com/
http://www.discountuniverse.com.au/

10) MONOXIOUS

Also very well executed diy's that will come in handy for future projects, like the chain harness, chain collar necklace, the bunny ears and bracelet.

11) COCOROSA

me :)
well I'm not really part of my own list..

diy miu miu tights
diy embellished tights

Of course there are blogs that should have made my list and didn't this time (stupid number 10)like Outsapop and Chic Steals which are massive DIY resources!! So check them out too!

ps. the person who counts the amount of the word "DIY" in this post gets a cookie ;)
