Vikramarkudu, the Telugu original of Rowdy Rathore, is set for a sequel, as is the Hindi remake

Six years after Telugu superstar Ravi Teja’s Vikramarkudu, a movie which was much appreciated up North, stormed the box office, news comes from Hyderabad that the makers are all set to film a sequel to the blockbuster. Interestingly, a sequel is also being planned to Rowdy Rathore, the Hindi remake of Vikramarkudu.

But Ravi is a step ahead. His director already has an idea for the sequel. The Rowdy Rathore team is still to come up with a firm idea. Teja says he isn’t aware of a sequel to Rowdy Rathore. “They’re planning a sequel? My director Rajamouli and I are also planning a sequel and have already begun work on the story.”

Ravi has wonderful things to say about Akshay Kumar. “Some of the scenes were done in Prabhu Deva’s style. Akshay has done a fabulous job with the comedy. When he says I’ve done a better job in the original he’s just being humble. He has caught on to the mood of the original and given it his own twist.”

Ravi does, however, find some elements from the original missing in the remake.

“There was this big scene where I fight with the women-folk. I asked Prabhu Deva about that scene and he said, ‘Akshay fighting with women would have looked politically incorrect.’ But in the original, women loved that scene. But the remake is a blockbuster.”

Ravi, also known as Mass Maharaja, is from Andhra Pradesh and has spent a lot of his formative years in Mumbai and Jaipur. “I enjoyed the struggle. My first break came in 1997 with Krishna Vamsi and then Puri Jagannadh, my closest friend.”

Ask him how he feels about being known as Mass Maharaja and Ravi bursts out laughing. “One of my directors named me that. It has stuck. It feels good when fans shout that out.”

Joker trailer to release with Cocktail

The first trailer of Shirish Kunder's "Joker", which is reportedly Akshay Kumar's 100th film, will release along with Homi Adjania's "Cocktail" when it hits the theatres Friday.

" 'Joker' trailer will now release earlier on July 12. So all those who were doing the countdown can minus "1" from it. Six days to go, " the 39-year-old tweeted Sunday.

When one of his fan asked Kunder about the name of the movie alongside which the trailer will be out, filmmaker replied by tweeting: "'Joker' trailer would be released along side 'Cocktail'."

"Joker" features Akshay and Sonakshi Sinha in the lead roles and is set for a Aug 31 release.

Akshay plays a character who returns to his hometown - a place that's so remote that it's not even on the map. But sequence of events puts the little town not just on the country's map, but makes it the focus of the entire globe.

Khatron Ke Khiladi 5: Ajay to replace Akki

Apparently, Akshay Kumar has bowed out of his action-based reality show to be close to wife Twinkle who will give birth in September

After months of speculation, we can finally confirm that Akshay Kumar will no longer play host on an action-based TV reality show. The actor has cited both professional and personal reasons for opting out. And now word is that Ajay Devgn might step into Akki’s shoes for the show’s upcoming season.

A source informs, “Akshay informed the channel and the producers of the show that he would be unable to play the host of the show which deals with stunts.

Akshay who has been the anchor for the first and the third season was sure to be retained. However, since he is expecting his second baby in September, he wants to be close to his wife Twinkle.” 

Our source also informs that Akki is quite busy in the process of completing his home production with Himesh Reshammiya and will be starting another home production. 

Regarding the channel approaching Devgn to take up Akki’s role, our source states, “Since Akshay is unavailable for this year, the channel thought of another actor who would fit in and they have approached Ajay for the show. 

The talks between them are currently on and if all goes well, he will be doing the show.” The source adds, “However, Ajay has his date diary blocked with multiple films and that’s why the channel has decided to postpone the show till next year.”

Akshay continues his love for action with new ad

He made a roaring comeback to action with "Rowdy Rathore". Following its success, Bollywood's 'khiladi' Akshay Kumar has shot an action-oriented advertisement.

"Taking up from where I left off in 'Rowdy Rathore'. Shooting in Kuala Lumpur for one of the most action-oriented ads of my career, " Akshay tweeted.

He also posted a picture of him jumping over a car.

However, the 44-year-old didn't reveal the product or brand for which he is shooting the ad. In the past, Akshay performed several stunts for aerated drink Thums Up.

Akshay scared of dance

Filmmaker Prabhu Deva, who directed Akshay Kumar in hit film "Rowdy Rathore", says the latter is comfortable with action and acting, but he feels stressed out when it comes to dancing.

Prabhu Deva made the startling revelation about Akshay on UTV Stars' "The Chosen One".

He had to assign and judge a task for young contestants on the show, and in the meantime, he narrated interesting anecdotes straight out of the sets of "Rowdy Rathore".

That's when he told the contestants about Akshay's apprehensions about dance.

He said the actor remains stress free as long as he doesn't have to shake a leg. But when asked to groove, he used to hardly talk.

In fact, Prabhu Deva said he had to indulge in pep talks with Akshay before shooting any dance sequence.

The filmmaker, an accomplished dancer himself, said that Akshay used to say: "Everything else is fine but when the song starts and I have to shake myself, I go blank! It really scares and stresses me!"

Sonali is back!

The actress reveals how comfort and friendship were crucial factors in choosing her comeback film 


There has been some buzz around Sonali Bendre’s comeback to the big screen and finally the actress has confirmed that she will indeed be playing a big role in Milan Luthria’s gangster next. The actress has been paired opposite Akshay Kumar. 

Our sources tell us that Milan was keen to have Sonali on board and she too agreed to hear the narration because of her friendship with producer Ekta Kapoor. In fact, on their first meeting itself, Sonali gave her nod to doing the film.

“I always wanted to work with people with whom I feel comfortable. I have worked with some uncomfortable people in the past and I did not wish to repeat that, ” Sonali says.


Sonali also attributes her signing this film to the close relationship shared by her mother-in-law and Ekta’s mother Shobha. She adds, “Milan in the past was an AD on one of the films I acted in. Akshay and I too have worked together before. I am sure I will be surrounded by friendly people on the sets.”


The actress tells us that she never imagined making a comeback to Bollywood, as she had been busy looking after her young son. The proud mother says, “Currently I am on a holiday with him and will start my work only after he goes back to school.”

First Look: Akshay Kumar's 'Oh My God'

Akshay Kumar plays the modern day Lord Krishna in his forthcoming film "Oh My God" and its first poster shows the star riding a motorcycle through the clouds with a bright colourful sky in the background.

After taking audiences on a laughter ride in "Hera Pheri", Akshay has teamed up with Paresh Rawal in his production venture "Oh My God".

Two posters gives a sneak peak into film and the second one shows Paresh, who plays Kanahaiya, standing with a smile on his face and gods and goddesses surrounding him.

Based on Umesh Shukla's Gujrati play "Kanji Viruddh", the "Oh My God" is about unconventional happenings in normal day to day lives. First time director Ashvini Yardi has wielded the megaphone for the film.

Which director calls Akshay 'uncle'?

Actor Akshay Kumar's former karate student Prateek Chakravorty has turned director with "From Sydney With Love" and the star reveals that the new director calls him "uncle".

"He calls me Akshay uncle. Backstage he asked me if he should call me Akshay uncle or not? I love what comes from the heart," the 44-year-old said here at the music launch of the film.

"This is unfortunate that he (Prateek) did not take me in his first film. I have told Prateek a lot of times that please make a film with me, but he refused. But he has promised me that he will cast me in his second film," added Akshay.

"From Sydney With Love" stars Prateek himself along with Bidita Bag, Sharad Malhotra, Evelyn Sharma and Karan Sagoo and it hits theatres July 27.

Talking about Prateek, Akshay further said: "Will you believe me if I say I used to teach him karate? He was a good student but then he stopped it.

"He always wanted to be a director, an actor and I am proud that he has become an actor, he has directed his first film and he has taken forward his grandfather Pramod Films' name ahead," said Akshay.

What's all taking a toll on Akshay Kumar ?

A crammed schedule, a soon- to- arrive baby, living out of a suitcase and pa- in- law's ill health -- is it all taking a toll on Akshay Kumar?

Akshay Kumar has been under the weather since the past two weeks. The actor known for his fitness and disciplined life has been suffering from a viral infection and probably for the first time in his 20-year-old career, he had to cancel the shoot of a film, which is his co-production with Himesh Reshammiya.

Not so lucky
However, he just couldn’t take time off from his other home production, starring Paresh Rawal, as it wasn’t possible to change the busy veteran actor’s dates. With his Bollywood timetable looking pretty crammed and his father-in-law seriously ill, it looks like Akki’s is having a sort of a crisis in his life right now.

Choc-o-bloc schedule
A friend of Akshay said, “Thankfully for Akshay, he lives a very disciplined life. He gives utmost importance to his diet and his workout secessions or else the kind of crazy work he does, it would have affected his health. Akshay is probably the only superstar who has as many as four to five releases every year.”

In fact, word is that Abhishek Bachchan went over to Mehboob Studios recently to meet Akshay after he heard his buddy was unwell. In fact, Akshay was even seen carrying relief balm in his hands at a party.

Too many commitments?
The friend adds, “Akshay will be heading to Singapore soon for a couple of shows and to shoot an ad film. After that, he will finally take three days off with his family.

He is also looking to shift back to his newly renovated house from the five-star hotel he has been staying in for the time being. Plus, also the promotional plans around his film with Shirish Kunder remains to be chalked out.”

Family matters
Akshay’s father-in-law Rajesh Khanna too has been seriously ill over the past few months, and recently had to be hospitalised. While Akki and his wife Twinkle have been at Khanna’s bedside, there is a chance that all this is taking a toll on the actor’s health. Also, Akki and Twinkle are expecting their second child in September.

Bollywood packs its best punch with raw action

Advanced technology can make actors fly in the air, jump down high-rises and do other dazzling, dangerous stunts. But it is the old Bollywood 'dhishoom, dhishoom' staple that really sets the viewer's adrenaline rushing - borne out by the success of "Rowdy Rathore", another raw action entertainer that has earned over Rs.105 crore.

"Dabangg", "Singham" and "Agneepath" had their fair share of raw action and all did brisk business, earning Rs.145 crore, Rs.139 crore and Rs.120 crore, respectively.

Salman Khan's "Wanted" and John Abraham's "Force" also fall in the same league of films with tough and strong male leads, who make villains count stars with their kicks and punches. End result? The viewers hooted, clapped, whistled and came back for more.

Clearly, hi-tech entertainers made with mega-budgets like underwater thriller "Blue" and sci-fi "Krrish" and "RA.One" have their place, but the masses, particularly those in the interiors, want raw, rugged action.

Agrees Bollywood's 'khiladi' Akshay Kumar, who returned to action with the Rs.45 crore-worth "Rowdy Rathore" after six years.

"I personally believe that people enjoy raw action more than technology. If you use too much of technology, it will bounce back. People are very smart and understand what is real and what is unreal," Akshay told.

"If you sit in single theatres and watch such films with the audience, you will hear people saying, 'Arre ye toh computer pe kiya hai (This is done on computer)'. You can't take your audiences for granted. So when I did my first action film 'Rowdy Rathore' after six years, I chose to do raw action. I believe in manpower and not technological power," he said.

The success of "Rowdy Rathore", which grossed over Rs.100 crore within two weeks of its release, ratifies his belief.

According to film critic Omar Qureshi, nothing works without a good story.

"Essentially, Bollywood is about songs, dance and drama. In between, our filmmakers were copying straight from Hollywood. They have a different style of filmmaking, which does not really connect with the rawness of our interiors," Qureshi told.

Does this mean that Bollywood is not ready for the slick action of films in the west?

"No! You have to detach yourself from the subject and then make a movie. You can have the best gadgets, you can shoot the movie underwater and you can shoot the movie on the moon... all you need is a good story," he said.

"Rowdy Rathore" co-producer Shabina Khan says action can be showcased in any form on the big screen, but it is of no use if it doesn't entertain the right way.

"People go to a theatre to be entertained. Today there are all sorts of action scenes - live action and special effects-created scenes. It's not true that live action entertains better," Khan told.

" 'Mission Impossible: 4' had hysterical action sequences, and it worked. Viewers can be entertained by just a sequence wherein one actor slaps another... it's just about the whole experience and how entertaining the experience is," she added.

"Dabangg 2", "Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai 2" and "Shootout At Wadala" are amongst the upcoming films showing plenty of the tried and tested 'dhishoom' formula. And the makers are hoping that they will be laughing all the way to the bank.

Akshay to finally work with Murugadoss

The South filmmaker's remake of 'Thupaki' to star Akshay Kumar in the lead

After much speculation, Akshay Kumar and A R Murugadoss will finally be working together in the official remake of his film Thupaki. The original is currently being shot with Tamil star Vijay and Kajal Agrawal.

Akshay’s close friend Vipul Shah will produce the film. This will be Akki’s second remake of a South film as an actor after Rowdy Rathore.

Our source informs, “This will be Murugadoss’s first film after Ghajini. Akshay and he have been planning this film from a long time but they were not able to zero down on any subject.

They have now finalised on this film that was earlier scheduled to be made in Hindi. However, due to Akki’s packed schedule, the making got delayed. Now, the remake is scheduled to start in December. The lead actress is yet to be finalised. ”

‘ROWDY RATHORE’ in top 5 biggest grosser of Bollywood

While the success of ‘Rowdy Rathore’ has fueled talks of its sequel, trade buzz has it that Akki’s mega blockbuster has found its place in the Top 5 Bollywood films of all time.

As far as the figures suggest, Aamir Khan rules on the top courtesy ‘3 Idiots’ which garnered Rs. 202 crore. Following close is Salman Khan’s ‘Dabangg’ and ‘Bodyguard’ which set the Box Office on fire amassing over 140 crores each. Akshay’s ‘Rowdy Rathore’ is fast catching up with Salman’s ‘Ready’ which accumulated Rs. 121 crores.

An industry expert confirmed, “Rowdy Rathore has now comfortably surpassed 120 crores in its third weekend itself, hence leaving behind the likes of Ra.One (115 crore), Agneepath (120 crores) and for that matter even Salman Khan`s Ready (121 crores).”

Now, the real test for ‘Rowdy Rathore’ is to sustain in the coming weeks as the battle intensifies with the release of much awaited films. "It would be quite difficult to cross that milestone though since in coming weeks, Akshay faces challenge from Shahid Kapoor (Teri Meri Kahaani) and The Amazing Spiderman which arrive back to back", an insider said.

However, according to film analysts ‘Rowdy Rathore’ could easily come close to the Rs. 135-crore mark, which is a huge achievement considering the fact that Akshay was facing rough weather last year.

Double roles back in B-town: One ticket, double mazaa

Bollywood's good old double role formula is back in vogue! Filmmakers are re-exploring the genre either with original scripts like "Rowdy Rathore", and "Bol Bachchan" or by remaking classics "Seeta Aur Geeta" and "Satte Pe Satta".

The success of Akshay Kumar's twin avatar in "Rowdy Rathore", which entered the Rs.100 crore (about $20 million) club within two weeks of its release, proves how the formula is still a hit.

"Double roles have been a classic and successful format in Hindi commercial cinema down the decades. In the last few years, probably because cinema has become more realistic and less fantastical, the number of movies with double roles had reduced. But they never really went out of fashion," said Siddharth Roy Kapur, managing director, Studios, Disney UTV.

"If the audience enjoys the contrast between the characters in each of the two roles, as was the case in 'Rowdy Rathore', it means they get full 'paisa vasool' - two Akshay Kumars for the ticket price of one," he told.

Rohit Shetty's "Bol Bachchan" is said to be inspired by 1979 movie "Gol Maal". In the comedy, Amol Palekar didn't have a double role, but his character changed get-ups. The forthcoming movie, set for release July 6, features Abhishek Bachchan creating double dhamaal.

The buzz is that filmmaker Anees Bazmee is set to give a triple bonanza by presenting Salman Khan, Anil Kapoor and Fardeen Khan in double roles in his comic caper "No Entry Mein Entry", a sequel to "No Entry".

Others who might be seen into double role include Katrina Kaif in "Seeta Aur Geeta" remake, Arjun Kapoor in "Aurangzeb", Saif Ali Khan in "Judwaa" sequel, Sanjay Dutt in "Satte Pe Satta" remake and Arjun Rampal in "Ajab Gajabb Love".

"Double role films work for a change. Shakti Samanta's 'China Town' (which had Shammi Kapoor in double role) was an apt example which later inspired 'Don' and now 'Rowdy Rathore' and a few others. Double role movies can conveniently be used in both, action as well as comedy films," said trade analyst Vinod Mirani.

Recently, actress Vidya Balan made her first attempt at a double avatar - a dream she could live thanks to an endorsement deal with a new range of snacks brand Aliva. "I was getting to play a double role. Only Sridevi and Hemaji (Hema Malini) have done it so far. I have always wanted to do a double role and we don't have double roles for some reason in films any more," Vidya had said.

In recent times, Shahid Kapoor carried off the double role well with "Kaminey".

The formula has been a winner in yesteryears. Be it Dev Anand in "Hum Dono", Dilip Kumar in "Ram Aur Shyam", Rajesh Khanna in "Aradhana", Rakhee in "Sharmilee", Hema Malini in "Seeta Aur Geeta", Amitabh Bachchan in "Don" and "Satte Pe Satta", Sridevi in "Chaalbaaz", Anil Kapoor in "Kishen Kanhaiya", Salman Khan in "Judwaa", Kajol in "Dushman" and Shah Rukh Khan in "Don" and "Duplicate"-most of Bollywood's top stars have been there and done the double dhamaal!

Hurt and isolated Manoj Kumar to sign Akshay Kumar for his comeback film

Manoj Kumar is all set to return to direction with a film called DNA Report. This would be Manoj Kumar’s first directorial venture since the badly-received Clerk in 1989. 

Informs the veteran director, “I haven’t been able to make any film because of my back problem. But now my script is ready. It’s a film called DNA Report. 

It’s about how a man becomes a victim of a DNA test when he has never had any emotional or physical relationship with a woman. Then how does the DNA report say he’s the father of the woman’s child? This is a subject I’ve never been into. ”

Says Manoj Kumar regretfully, “I don’t have the comfort of working with Manoj Kumar the actor anymore. He is capable of telling home truths in the most understated manner. So I’ve to select from the stars today. It’s an expensive film. I have zeroed in on an actor. But until everything is finalized I can’t talk about it. ”

The chosen star could be Akshay Kumar. 

Akshay is a self-confessed Manoj Kumar fan. 


Says Manoj fondly about Akshay, “He has great respect for me. In his film with Katrina Kaif Namaste London he said, ‘If you want to know what India is all about take a look at a dvd of Purab Aur Pachchim, and you’ll know. In fact Purab Aur Pachchim the mother of many subsequent films. ” 

Manoj may go for a completely new leading lady. 

Says the actor, “I have an eye for talent. Do you know in Shor when Sharmila Tagore ditched me (she was supposed to play my wife’s role that Nanda finally played) I had offered that role to Smita Patil. She politely told me she was not interested in acting at that point of time. God has given me honest eyes and pure ears. ”

Mulling over his long absence from direction Manoj Kumar says, “I never intended to be a director in he first place. I became one by default when during Shaheed I had to direct the film unofficially. Then Lal Bahadur Shastri raised the slogan of ‘Jai jawan jai kishan’. 

That’s how I made Upkar. I give credit for my success to my parents. My father was a poet philosopher. I came to Mumbai with two targets. One was to be a hero, the other was to make 3 lakh rupees, 1 lakh each for my two parents and 1 lakh for my siblings.

When I had left home in Delhi in 1956 to come to Mumbai to become a hero my father gave me a letter. In that letter he said, ‘My blood can never commit blunders, only mistakes’. I made mistakes in my career. But not blunders. ”

Commenting in his long absence from direction says, “I am not a greedy film person even as an actor. While my contemparies Dharmendra and Shashi Kapoor acted in nearly 300 films each I’ve done hardly 35 films in my entire career.

One of my last directorial ventures Kalyug Aur Ramayan was my best script. But because it went through a lot of changes it lost its sheen. My characters were called Ram and Sita.

There was a song in the film Kalyug ki sita milne judge ko chali/Sau chuhe khake billi haj ko chali…The moral police took offence. Some people in our society specialize in stopping creative people from doing what they do. 

The censor board threatened to ban the picture. I changed the title from Kalyug Ki Ramayan to Kalyug Aur Ramayan. The film was not the same any longer. ” 


Among all the films that Manoj Kumar has directed he considers Shor in 1972 his finest.

“It was about a man and his son. I remember I had gone to sign Jaya Bhaduriji after seeing her in Guddi. I told her, ‘Shor is about a father and son. The son can’t speak and the father pines to hear him. But the day that the son speaks the father can’t hear any more. ’ 

No Indian film had been made on a such a thin storyline. And that is the only film I directed in which I was not named Bharat. Do you know they took one sequence from Shor and made an Iranian film in 1987 called The Cyclist which won numerous awards. 

Shor was the first film that I edited myself. The great Hrishikesh Mukherjee who was the chairperson of editors’ jury gave me the Filmfare award for best editor. Coming from such a skilled technician that was a special challenge for me. ”

Manoj Kumar admits he feels hurt and isolated within the entertainment industry. “I am not brooding about it. But when I read the interviews of actors whom I gave major breaks to and they don’t even mention me, dukh to hota hai. ”

'Rowdy Rathore' team parties, crossing Rs.100 cr mark

It's been in the theatres for over two weeks, but "Rowdy Rathore" is still minting money. As the movie has already crossed the Rs.100 crore mark, its cast and crew partied hard here Friday night to celebrate its success.

So far, the film is said to have made Rs.114.5 crore nett.

Director Prabhu Deva, whose "Wanted" was also a runaway hit, said: "I am very happy that both my films crossed the Rs.100 crore mark. Now I am scared of making my third film as people's expectations have increased."

The success party was held at Taj Land's End. The lead pair of the film -- Akshay Kumar and Sonakshi Sinha were also present at the event.

While Akshay wore a black shirt, Sonakshi sizzled in a short black dress. "Rowdy Rathore" is Sonakshi's second film and also her second hit after "Dabangg". She is ecstatic.

"I want all my films to do well, so I keep my fingers crossed, " she said.

Filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who has produced the movie, and Siddharth Roy Kapoor of UTV Motion Pictures, were also part of the party.

'Joker': Going round in circles for UFOs

Shirish Kunder had a tough time making crop circles to depict UFO landings in his upcoming film ‘Joker’ 

As Shirish Kunder’s next film with Akshay Kumar and Sonakshi Sinha deals with UFOs, director Shirish Kunder had to make crop circles in Chandigarh where the film was shot. When UFOs land on earth, they much burn the land leaving saucer shaped tell-tale signs. The film’s production team had to make crop circles to depict the aftermath of an UFO landing.

Crop circles are created by the flattening of crops. But shooting is difficult because the crops would dry up soon and if they were damaged, shooting could not occur due to continuity reasons.

It would happen so often that an actor would have to pass through the crop circle and if that shot was not okayed, the entire crew would have set them up on another location where they have made an extra crop circle for safety and if there also shot would not happen, then move to another.

Says Shirish, “It was really tedious. We ate up half of Chandigarh in making the crop circles!” 

This also required extreme patience of the cast member. We wondered if this angered Akshay, on which Shirish said, “ Akshay is a level headed guy and he is known to keep his cool on sets. I don’t think he himself remember the last time he lost his temper.”


No 3D version for 'Joker'

Shirish Kunder says that he has scrapped plans to release his next project "Joker" in 3D, considering the fate of recent 3D films at the box office.

"JOKER will release in 2D format. It's a decision taken by business heads based on the reactions to recent 2D and 3D films of big superstars," tweeted Kunder.

Some recent 3D films in Hindi include "RA.One", "Don 2: The King Is Back" and "Dangerous Ishq". 

Akshay plays a character who returns to his hometown - a place that's so remote that it's not even on the map. But sequence of events puts the little town not just on the country's map, but makes it the focus of the entire globe. 

The story also involves aliens.

Akshay invites Canadian PM to watch Thank You

Thank You has been shot in Canada, and the movie sees Akshay play an Indo-Canadian detective. Akshay who has highest regard for the PM, was very keen on holding the special screening.

Canada has a sizable Punjabi population and Akshay, who often refers to Canada as his second home, will continue to be the Canadian Tourism Commission's ambassador for India for a second year. As part of his duties as the Tourism ambassador Akshay promotes Canada as a tourist destination.

Thank you is a Hindi movie starring Akshay Kumar, Sonam Kapoor, Bobby Deol and is directed by Anees Bazmee, and released on April 8th. The film has got a lukewarm response at the box office.
