Ayushmann Khurrana on life post 'Vicky Donor' and signing his second film


Life’s just not the same after Vicky Donor. Ayushmann Khuranna who has become a household name post his debut in the film has two films up his sleeve — another John Abraham production and Rohan Sippy’s untitled next. The Chandigarh actor chats with us on life post his debut and juggling life in Mumbai and his hometown.

We heard about all the heartbreaks post news that you were already married!
(Laughs) Someone who finds me sexy will always find me so. It doesn’t matter if I am married! But my talent goes beyond my looks.

You have signed John Abraham’s next production as well...
It has almost the same team as Vicky Donor! The film is about a tour guide in Agra who becomes a superstar.

We heard you had great fun at IIFA?
It was great. I was the new clown in Singapore.

Life post Vicky Donor?
I never knew people would accept the film so well. It’s a huge compliment but it has added more responsibility.

As an outsider earlier it was different but now I know that celebrities are also normal human beings with great talent. There are people who are better than me but are not doing well and I have also seen the ones who are not as good as me but are still doing well.


Is it hard shuttling between two cities — Mumbai and Chandigarh?

I actually have to go to Chandigarh every month. I haven’t taken a vacation in a long time but I have to keep traveling for events. My family stays in Chandigarh. Life looks sorted…

Is there anyone in Bollywood you are aching to work with?
I am a huge fan of Madhuri Dixit. I worship Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh. And I really want to work with Anushka Sharma and Parineeti Chopra.

You have also signed Rohan Sippy’s next...
I am about to start shooting for Rohan’s film. I am so excited. I remember having interviewed Abhishek Bachchan who is doing a cameo in the film and I also once interviewed Rohan when I was a VJ. I can’t reveal any detail other than that it’s a rom-com set in Mumbai and will definitely connect with the masses.

Bachchan Jr to do a cameo in Rohan Sippy's next film; Bhushan Kumar joins as co-producer

Rohan Sippy is all set to begin the production of his next film, a comedy, in July. The yet untitled film co-produced by Bhushan Kumar, stars Ayushmann Khurrana and Kunal Roy Kapoor. Abhishek Bachchan will be seen in a cameo. This will also be the first time that Bhushan Kumar and Ramesh Sippy join hands to co-produce a film.

As reported ‘Next move’ (Hitlist, May 31) Rohan took on Ayushmann after seeing his performance in Vicky Donor. On the other hand, Rohan had worked with Kunal Roy Kapoor as he directed a film for him earlier. 

Says Rohan, “I realised that Kunal has great potential as an actor and that’s why we got him on board as well. Ayushmann and Kunal are new age actors who have a definite connect with today’s audience.” 

He further adds, “We have done many films with Bhushan Kumar and he is an extremely passionate producer. It is amazing to see the kind of clout he enjoys in the industry, but in spite of that, he has the passion to make those kinds of films that he believes in.” 

Speaking about Abhishek’s cameo Rohan says, “He is my goodluck charm and he is doing a cameo. We are trying to shoot before he starts shooting for his upcoming action flick.”

Meanwhile, Bhushan Kumar stresses that he has always wanted to work with people who have a good sense of music and Rohan Sippy is surely one of them. Bhushan says, “Rohan is one director who has a great sense of music. The experience of working on Dum Maro Dum with him was great. And even now, he has given me a lot of freedom to get involved in the music of this film.”

Ayushmann-Kunal Roy Kapoor in Rohan Sippy's Rom-Com

Bestfriends for life Abhishek Bachchan and Rohan Sippy have decided to take a break from one another. After starring in all the three films that Rohan Sippy has directed (Kuch Na Kaho, Bluffmaster and Dum Maro Dum) Abhishek Bachchan has decided to take a break from all things Sippy.

The actor currently exploring an area beyond his comfort zone working with directors who aren’t necessarily personal friends (e. g Rohit Shetty)has opted out of Rohan Sippy’s next to make way for Ayushmann Khurrana and Kunal Roy Kapoor who will do what appears to be a buddy-buddy film on the lines of Bluffmaster.

Says a source close to the project, “Rohan can’t dream of directing without Abhishek. He wrote his new film with Abhishek in mind to play one of the leads. He wanted to revive the Bluffmaster duo of Abhishek and Riteish Deshmukh. But after Dum Maro Dum Abhishek has done some serious re-thinking. He is not doing the next films of either of his childhood friends Rohan Sippy or Goldie Behl. ”

The new Rohan Sippy film stars the Vicky Donor actor Ayushmann Khurrana with the Delhi Belly actor Kunal Roy Kapoor.

Roy Kapoor had directed the political satire Shall We Tell The President for producer Rohan Sippy 5 years ago.

Confirming the casting Kunal Roy Kapoor said, “It’s a rom-com. I can’t say much more. I am really looking forward to working with Rohan and Ayushmann. ”

I literally donated sperm: Ayushmann

Ayushmann Khurrana, in the spotlight for his role as a sperm donor in the film ‘Vicky Donor’, said he was lucky to have been able to make a transition from the small screen to the big screen. 


Basking in his post Vicky Donor success, the actor was in Kolkata as a showstopper in a fashion show of ace designer Jaya Misra. 

“Vicky Donor is a huge lead. I am lucky that I could make this transition with great success from small screen to big screen and that too in just my first film. Not all can make this transition in such a short time. I am lot busier now,” he told in an interview.

“My agenda as of now is to stick with the big screen. I want to explore in the field of cinema. However that does not mean I will not be seen in television. I have become more selective for Television,” he said. 

Talking about his upcoming projects, he said: “I have got a proposal from director Rohan Sippy for the sequel of the film, ‘Tere Bin Laden’, though I have not yet signed for the film. Also there is another film with Shoojit Sircar titled ‘Hamara Bajaj’. Also I would be singing in one of my next films.”


Giving light to his personal life he said, “At school I was known for my dancing skills, though I am not a very good dancer. I do have a sense of rhythm. At college I used to write and compose songs. My passion was theatre, and I also had two theatre groups Aaghaaz and Manchtantra. However when I was put between two option of anchoring and theatre, I chose anchoring.” 


He said, “You have to choose wisely about your life. These decisions cannot be taken randomly. I waited four years before I signed for ‘Vicky Donor’."

Commenting on his debut film, he said, “I literally donated my sperm and then the feeling was same as that of in the film. Obviously if I see that I am the biological father of some kids, I would react same way as my reaction in the film. Some feelings cannot be expressed in words.” 

He said, “An entertaining film is something that will definitely have some fiction and some non-fictitious elements in it. For example a sperm donor cannot earn so much money as depicted in the movie. Though there is true life incidents were childless couples were ready to pay Rs 50,000 for the sperm of an IIT student.”

When asked whether he feels insecure about the upcoming debutants in the industry, he said, “It all in your head. Fame is transitory, will not last forever. You must perform and give your 100 per cent, that’s what matters at the end of the day.” 


He said, “I don’t have an agenda of giving messages through films. I am an actor and I would like to explore every genre of the field.” 


Talking about Kolkata he said, “The people of Kolkata, Chandigarh and Goa have a much laid back attitude. I, hailing from Chandigarh am also a cool and easy going person. I like it here. “

Ayushmann said on his fashion debut in the eastern city, “Technically this is the first time I will be walking on the ramp. I was never like a fashion police being very conscious about my looks and dress." 

"But after ‘Vicky Donor’, now I think I will take dressing up a little seriously. I never thought or desired to walk on a ramp. I am grateful to Ms Jaya to give me this opportunity.”

Post 'Vicky Donor', Ayushmann to focus more on movies

Ayushmann Khurrana, who made it big in Bollywood with his debut film "Vicky Donor", says he will now focus more on films rather than on TV shows. 

" 'Vicky Donor' has been one of the biggest debuts in the last decade. For now, movies are on my agenda. I will be more selective about my TV projects," said the 27-year-old who started his showbiz journey as one of the contestants on season two of "Roadies".

Directed by Shoojit Sircar and produced by John Abraham, "Vicky Donor" was made on a Rs.5 crore budget and earned Rs.45 crore.

Ayushmann says he is enjoying the fame, but it has not got into his head.

"I am surely relishing the added fame and attention that I am getting now, but I know how to handle fame. It's all in your head. If you start taking yourself too seriously, you will end up killing yourself," he said.

Taking about his upcoming projects, he said: "I am doing 'Hamara Bajaj'. It is being produced by John Abraham. I'm doing an untitled Rohan Sippy (director) movie and the sequel to 'Tere Bin Laden', which is still in talks."

In the city as a show stopper for fashion designer Jaya Misra, the young actor loved the "laid back" attitude of Kolkata.

"I love the laid back attitude of the people here. They are so relaxed and cool I surely like the city."
