You can’t say 'Three months from now I'll be pregnant', it just happens: Malaika

Actor Malaika Arora Khan is not a tech savvy person but doesn’t mind learning about them from husband Arbaaz Khan. Sreya Basu catches up with the gorgeous Bollywood item girl as she launched Taiwan Excellence Campaign 2012 organized by Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) in Mumbai

Are you a tech-savvy person?
I don’t believe I am technology savvy, but I decided to launch Taiwan Excellence Campaign because it is a great opportunity to get involved with so many different brands. Life is always a learning process and you are never too young or old to learn something. 

So how do you learn about gadgets?
Whatever I have to learn about gadgets, I learn from my husband (actor-director Arbaaz Khan). He is very, very technology savvy and keeps me updating with the latest.

What Taiwanese products will you choose for your two famous item girl avatars-Munni (from Dabangg) and Anarkali (from Housefull 2)?
If I have to think from the perspective of ‘Munni’ I would have gone for cool Taiwanese headphones…they look quite interesting. As ‘Anarkali’ I would use Taiwanese external hard drive so that she can get music for her disco.

How is that one aspect in your life which you can never let go?
I am quite a travel bug. I love to travel. I am very adventurous whether it’s in terms of adventure sports, travel, bag-packing, trains…whatever it takes to enjoy a place, I am absolutely open to that. 

Every time I go to a new place, I try something different…whether it is skydiving, Bungee Jumping…I make sure whenever I travel to a new place, I learn something. I believe the experience and knowledge you can gather by travelling, no book can offer you that. 

Do you prefer an ‘all girls’ trip or travel shouldn’t be gender-centric?
It is essential to travel either as a part of an ‘all girls’ trip or an ‘all boys’ trip. That way you explore and enjoy far more.

What do you have to say about people who every other day file a petition in a court if they find anything objectionable in a song or a film?
I would like to keep it very simple - if you don’t like a particular film or song, don’t watch or listen it.

Whenever there is an item number in a film, people expects you to do it…
That’s a question everyone asks me but I don’t have an answer to that. Every time somebody has a song in a film or a guest appearance, people ask me why I am not in it. But it’s not physically possible for me to be seen in every item song.

Somebody asked me why I am not in song (Character Dheela) in Ready (2011 film starring brother-in-law Salman Khan) since it was such a good one.

But I can’t possibly be part of everything. When I find it necessary for me to be a part of something or vice-versa, things definitely work out. 


What’s your take on the Pregnancy Clause in Bollywood which says actresses shouldn’t get pregnant while they are working on a particular project?
I don’t know how much these clauses are going to work and what will come out of it. It’s understanding that matters. I remember, I was with MTV when I was pregnant and I had a great work relationship. 

When I got to know about my pregnancy, I informed them and they were very gracious about it and let me take my necessary break and even gave me the option to come back to work if I want.

Pregnancy is something which just happens, you can’t say ‘Three months from now and I will be pregnant’. At the end of the day, it’s about how much professional you are. You should have the presence of mind to inform people you are working with and they will understand.

I like Katrina and Kareena's Item Songs: Malaika Arora Khan

Model-turned-actress Malaika Arora Khan says Bollywood is open to artists from all across the world and everybody is welcome. 

"Whether Indian girls or foreigners, I don't know what is the difference. They all are artists, whether you are from here, whether you are from Taiwan, whether you are from wherever in the world, I think this industry is open to everybody. This place is for everyone, so everyone is welcome to be here to perform and be a part of the industry," she said. 

The actress who has some of the best item songs to her credit like "Munni Badnam" and "Anarkali disco chali", says she likes other item songs too.

"Some really cool songs have been out in the recent past. I like (Kareena Kapoor's) 'Chhammak Chhallo' very much. I like (Katrina Kaif's) 'Chikni Chameli'. I think these are really cool," the 39-year-old said here Tuesday when she was asked about her favourite item songs.

Malaika was at the Four Season Hotel here to launch the Taiwan Excellence Campaign 2012. 


Meanwhile, she revealed that the music of her home production "Dabangg 2" is still in the pipeline and she has not decided whether she would do an item number in it.

"We are in the process of shooting the film. But what we want to do for the songs, that is still in the pipeline. Nothing is decided." 

Malaika was last seen in the item song "Anarkali" in "Housefull 2".

Munni enters Guinness Book of World Records

The famous item number from blockbuster film “Dabangg” titled ‘Munni Badnam Hui’ picturised on Malaika Arora Khan has made it to the Guinness Book of World Records. In an event organized by Mitu Bhowmick Lange, director of Indian Film Festival, more than 1200 people shook their legs to this three minute item song in Melbourne, Australia led by Malaika Arora Khan.

Malaika was presented a certificate for creating the record. This record was earlier created in Singapore where more than 1008 people danced on this song.

What makes Malaika the extreme Bollywood zest girl

Malaika Arora Khan not an actor, never mind the odd itsy-bitsy role in the odd forgettable film. Yet she has lasted in the film industry for over a decade. “I’m pretty much peripheral in terms of Bollywood, but yet in a way, because of the family I am married into, and my songs, I am in Bollywood ,” she says.

It all started on top of a train. The year was 1998 and the film Mani Ratnam’s Dil Se. Malaika did the Chhaiyya chhaiyya Shah Rukh Khan and we all know how that turned out. Twelve years later, the “item number” is alive, though perhaps not flourishing, and she is still at the top, offered “a song a day toh pucca”. It’s a fact of the business: if an “item” song is the masala your film needs, Malaika is the go-to girl. In an industry where leading ladies turn into wallflowers in less than half a decade, what’s the secret of the dream run?



“She’s sexy, she’s beautiful and she’s a very good dancer,” says choreographer and director Farah Khan, “but then so are a lot of girls out there.” The difference, Farah says, is in the way she has planned her career. “Malaika has an edge because she has chosen her assignments wisely, maintained her exclusivity and is extremely professional. That’s the reason she has lasted so long,” she says. That, and the backing of one of Bollywood’s most powerful film families.

Bollywood couple hot Malaika, Sallu's hot moves

Arbaaz Khan and Malaika Arora Khan was recently in Delhi for the promotion of their home production “Dabangg. The movie is Arbaaz’s first attempt as a producer but he exuded the confidence of a professional, “I have been in the industry for last 14 years and have grown up observing all the technicalities of movie making. This is not new.

Even when I was acting I thought of taking up production in future. It was not a cakewalk when I decided to take up production. But I am grateful to Salman and other family members who supported me in pursuing my dream,” said the confident Arbaaz.

So what made you choose Salman over other actors? “It is a home production, so Salman had to be a part of it. He is a strong and versatile actor, he has experience and has been in the industry for a longer period than I have been. I was sure he wouldn’t deny acting in my film,” he said.

So it must be fun with bhai-bonding on the sets, no? “Salman is very professional... he would come to the set and give his best shot... wahan bhai giri nahi chalti thi,” he said. What was the challenge while filming “Dabangg”?

“It was a big challenge to cast Salman with debutante actress Sonakshi Sinha. But Sonakshi deserves a pat on her back; she was very confident during the shooting of the film and didn’t look like a newcomer,” he said.

In the film Malaika has given a hot item number with Salman, and Arbaaz has loved her moves. “Malaika is hot, sexy and confident and she fits into the role in the item song. There was no other option. It is not for the first time that she is dancing on an item song. In fact, she didn’t even hesitate in dancing with Salman on that number,” he said.

And it was not just Arbaaz’s moment... even Malaika is proud of hubby Arbaaz’s new role – Producer, “I’m very proud of him. I’m glad that I got an an opportunity to dance on an item number in the film. After all, it is our home production. It was good to see that everybody from the family be it Salman bhai or Sohail bhai, my husband or me was involved in this new project,” she said.

Did you hesitate while dancing on an item number with Salman? “Why should there be any reason. My husband’s family is very broad minded. The bonding in our family is very beautiful be it brother, sister or bhabhis,” she said.

With everyone, right from Salman to Sohail being discussed, how could the couple’s son – Arhaan stay away from the candid conversation! “If I’m at home I spend most of my time playing cricket with my son. You have to check him out, he is just 7 years old and is as good as a professional cricketer. He is a gyani guru of cricket. He teaches me what is off spin, googly etc. For a change, I enjoy talking about cricket with him and not movies. I’m sure he will become a cricketer,” he said.

“I shall make him join a cricket academy and enroll him for training,” he said. Follow us on Twitter for more stories Any more production plans for future? “I’m taking it very slow and easy.
